Bangladesh and India have agreed to accelerate the momentum that exists between the countries with an eye on the next 50 years of cooperation in diversified areas.

Emphasis was also put on enhanced connectivity, not just between Bangladesh and India but beyond the two countries to ensure broader economic benefits.

“We not only need to continue the momentum, we need to accelerate the momentum,” Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said sharing the outcome of talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on Saturday evening.

Modi had a “productive meeting” with Hasina and reviewed the full range of Bangladesh-India relations and discussed ways to deepen economic and cultural linkages in the times to come.

He said Prime Minister Hasina raised the Teesta issue while the Indian Prime Minister reiterated India's commitment to that end, sharing India’s sincere and continued efforts to conclude the agreement.

The Indian Foreign Secretary said cooperation in the areas of common rivers water is an important issue.

Responding to a question, Shringla said the Rohingya issue is an important issue which was discussed.

He said India shares border with both Bangladesh and Myanmar and will continue to work for safe, speedy and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

On the second day of his two-day visit to Bangladesh, Modi also addressed representatives of the Matua community at Orakandi, from where Sri Sri Hari Chand Thakur ji disseminated his pious message of social reforms.

Responding to a question, Shringla said the visit should not be looked at in a “narrow context” as the two countries share so many things.

The Indian Foreign Secretary touched upon all areas of cooperation at the briefing at a city hotel that lasted till 8:30pm.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami and official spokesperson at Indian Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi were also present.

Before leaving Dhaka, the Indian Prime Minister thanked the people of Bangladesh for their affection during his visit.

He also thanked Prime Minister Hasina and the Bangladesh government for the warm hospitality.

“I’m sure this visit will lead to further strengthening of bilateral ties between our nations,” Modi tweeted.

Bangladesh and India signed MoUs in key sectors such as disaster management, sports and youth affairs, trade, technology and more.

Modi said these will add strength to their development partnership and benefit the people of the two nations, especially the youth.

He also had a meeting with President Abdul Hamid where they exchanged views on a wide range of subjects pertaining to India-Bangladesh cooperation.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen saw the India Prime Minister off at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday night.
