A minority family in Patuakhali has alleged assault, intimidation and attempts to grab their land by local influential people in Marichbunia union under the sadar upazila. At a press conference held at the Patuakhali Press Club on Saturday noon, victim Gopal Majhi read out a written statement detailing the allegations. He said some locals had long been trying to forcibly occupy their recorded and possessed land. According to him, he owns about 40 decimals of land in the Marichbunia mouza area. He alleged that due to the land dispute, several people including local Awami League leader and now a member of Bangladesh Krishak Dal, Zakir Bhuiya, along with Suman Payda, Nasir Akon, Harun Matbar, Jafar Bhuiya and Nizam Payda, have repeatedly threatened him and his family. Majhi claimed that even after filing a complaint with police, the accused came to his house with sharp weapons, threatened them and obstructed his children from going to school. He also alleged they were threatened to leave the country for India. In the written statement, he said that around 9pm on February 16, the accused intercepted him while he was returning home by motorcycle, assaulted him and tried to kill him with local weapons. He and his brother were seriously injured and are now undergoing treatment at Patuakhali Sadar Hospital. He further alleged that the attackers snatched Tk 2.2 lakh in cash and two gold chains from him during the incident. He named Zakir Bhuiya, Suman Payda and Nasir Akon as accused and claimed that 7–8 unidentified persons were also involved. “We have been harassed in various ways for being a minority. We feel insecure and want quick administrative intervention and punishment of the culprits,” Majhi said. Responding to the allegations, Zakir Bhuiya said his son-in-law Suman bought the land about five years ago and built a house there. He also claimed the matter had earlier been settled through local arbitration and denied giving any threat to force them to go to India. Officer-in-Charge of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station, Moniruzzaman, said police were aware of the clash and one person had previously been arrested. However, he added that no complaint had been received regarding threats to leave for India. Legal action will be taken if complaints are filed, he said.

The Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin has congratulated Tarique Rahman upon his appointment to the post of the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The head of the Russian government expressed confidence that constructive joint efforts at the government level will be conducive to broader cooperation in trade, economy, investment, culture, and people-to-people ties for the benefit of both nations, said the Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Saturday.

At least five people, including three women, were killed when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a gas cylinder-laden truck on the bypass road in Kushtia on Saturday afternoon. The identities of the victims could not be immediately ascertained. The accident occurred around 2:05 pm, said Abu Obayed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Highway Police. Among the deceased were the CNG driver, a male passenger, and three women, police said. Upon receiving information, police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and conducted rescue operations. Traffic movement on the road was disrupted for some time following the accident but was later restored. Police said both vehicles involved in the accident have been seized, while the truck driver fled the scene. Legal action is underway regarding the accident.

The government will begin providing honorariums to khatibs, imams and muezzins in some areas before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, as part of implementing an election pledge. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Saturday. Talking to reporters at the PMO gate, the Prime Minister’s adviser Mahdi Amin said the government promised monthly honorariums and festival allowances for khatibs, imams, muezzins and religious leaders of other faiths. “Our election commitments were discussed today. The Prime Minister particularly spoke about the pledge to provide monthly honorariums and festival allowances for respected khatibs, imams and muezzins and religious leaders of other faiths,” he told reporters. “Following the Prime Minister’s directive, a decision has been taken that, InshaAllah, after completing preparations we will gradually start the programme before Eid. In some areas, respected khatibs, imams and muezzins will be given an honorarium, InshaAllah," Mahdi added. He, however, said the amount of the honorarium has not yet been fixed and will be finalised at an inter-ministerial meeting. Mahdi also said the government discussed wider election promises, including creating employment opportunities on merit without discrimination across public and private sectors, entrepreneurship and overseas employment. He said reforms in education, especially technical and vocational training, and policy changes for business and industry were also discussed to help create skilled manpower and faster job opportunities. Earlier, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly said Saturday marked the Prime Minister’s third working day in office and that he issued several directives to implement election pledges. Later, another meeting on establishing a cheerful and career-oriented education system, creating employment opportunities, and expanding sports infrastructure and training facilities was also held at the PMO. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting. Ministers, state ministers and senior officials concerned were present at the meeting. The Prime Minister began work at the PMO on Saturday for the first time after assuming office. Though it was a public holiday, he went to the office at 10:10am, where Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon received him.

The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a major portion of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, triggering positive reactions from analysts, economists and international media, while leaving questions over the future course of US trade policy. In a 6–3 ruling, the court said the executive branch overstepped its legal authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The judges found that the law does not allow the president to impose sweeping, across-the-board tariffs without clear approval from Congress. Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Saturday said there is no need for a separate oath for the ‘Yes’ vote, as it will automatically take effect once the Jatiya Sangsad is in session. “The national election has already been held. The members of parliament have taken oath. A referendum was conducted and  the ‘Yes’ has won,” he told reporters after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement at the Shaheed Minar in the Lakshmipur district. He also urged people to move away from what he described as mob culture, saying it creates disorder and instability. “Mob culture means creating chaos. If an atmosphere of disorder is created, it will obstruct the process of building Bangladesh. Those who create obstacles to building the country will eventually turn into enemies of the nation,” he said. The minister urged all to refrain from such practices. Among others present at the event were Lakshmipur district BNP Member Secretary Sahab Uddin Sabu, Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, and Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy.

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI said Friday it had considered last year alerting Canadian authorities about a user who months later carried out one of the country’s deadliest school shootings. In June 2025, OpenAI identified the account of 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar through its abuse detection system for “furtherance of violent activities.” The company said it debated whether to report the account to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) but decided at the time that the activity did not meet the threshold for law enforcement referral. The account was banned that same month for violating OpenAI’s usage policy. Amazon halts surveillance tech partnership as ad triggers privacy debate Last week, Van Rootselaar killed eight people in a remote area of British Columbia before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. OpenAI explained that its threshold for notifying authorities involves cases with an imminent and credible risk of serious physical harm, which it did not find in this instance. The Wall Street Journal first reported the company’s revelation. Following the shootings, OpenAI said its employees contacted the RCMP, providing information about Van Rootselaar and his use of ChatGPT. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Tumbler Ridge tragedy. We proactively reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and will continue to support their investigation,” an OpenAI spokesperson said. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark confirmed OpenAI’s post-incident contact and said investigators are reviewing Van Rootselaar’s electronic devices, social media, and online activity. Authorities said he first killed his mother and stepbrother at home before attacking the school. He had prior mental health contacts with police, but his motive remains unclear. Tech-themed fair showcases dancing robots for Lunar New Year The small town of Tumbler Ridge, home to 2,700 people, is located over 1,000 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, near the Alberta border. The victims included a 39-year-old teaching assistant and five students aged 12 to 13. The attack was Canada’s deadliest since the 2020 Nova Scotia rampage, in which a gunman killed 13 people and set fires that claimed nine more lives.

Bangladesh on Friday observed Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day with due respect and solemnity, as people from all walks of life paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the recognition of Bangla as a state language. From the first hour of February 21, people thronged Shaheed Minars across the country, placing floral wreaths and observing silence in memory of the language martyrs.  Programmes were held in district towns, educational institutions and public spaces in a dignified and emotional atmosphere. On February 21, 1952, students and activists were killed when police opened fire on demonstrators demanding Bangla as a state language.  Among those martyred were Salam, Barkat, Rafiq and Jabbar. In recognition of their sacrifice, UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day in 1999. Since then, the day has been observed worldwide to promote linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. In Chattogram, the Shaheed Minar became a place of emotion and reverence as people of all ages began gathering from late night.  After a ceremonial police salute, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain and others laid wreaths in a solemn atmosphere. In Sylhet, large crowds gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in the Chauhatta area from midnight.  Floral tributes began at 12:01am, with participation from different segments of society.  Labour and Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Arifur Rahman Chowdhury, along with government officials, freedom fighters and leaders of political, social and cultural organisations, including BNP, paid homage to the language martyrs. In Barishal, senior officials including the divisional commissioner, DIG, police commissioner and deputy commissioner placed wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar during the first hour of the day. They were followed by leaders of the district Muktijoddha Sangsad and various political, social and cultural organisations. Teachers and students from different educational institutions also joined the observance. In Chuadanga, programmes began at 12:01am with floral tributes at the district Central Shaheed Minar.  The district administration, police, political parties, social and cultural organisations, educational institutions and members of the public paid homage.  A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs.

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a Rohingya man and seized 330,000 Yaba  tablets in separate anti-narcotics operations along the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban. The arrestee was identified as Bashir Ahmed, 50, a Rohingya resident of Balukhali Camp-09 in Ukhia. He is the son of Abu Siddique. BGB’s Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) conducted the operations in Ghumdhum and Baishfari border areas under Ghumdhum Union. According to BGB, at around 5:30 am on Saturday, a patrol team from the Ghumdhum BOP carried out a special operation based on intelligence information at Kankra Bridge, about 1.1 kilometres inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar-31.  During the raid, the team arrested Bashir Ahmed with 80,000 Yaba pills. Earlier, on Thursday night at around 9:40 pm, another patrol team from the Baishfari BOP conducted a separate operation at a bamboo grove area, about 200 yards inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar-36. The team recovered 250,000 Yaba pills in an abandoned condition. No one was arrested in that operation. BGB brings back 73 fishermen held by Arakan Army The total seizure from the two operations stood at 330,000 Yaba pills. Confirming the incident, Cox’s Bazar Battalion Commander Lt Col SM Khairul Alam said BGB remains committed not only to guarding the border but also to preventing drug trafficking and smuggling. “Such operations will continue in the future,” he said. BGB said legal action is underway to hand over the arrested Rohingya man along with the seized Yaba pills to police, following the filing of a case under existing laws.

Persistently hotter global waters led the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this month to change how it determines when the cycle shifts, likely resulting in more events labeled La Niña and fewer classified as El Niño despite warming tropical seas. Kabul in Afghanistan, Lahore in Pakistan, and Kolakata in India occupied the first, third, and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 343, 221, and 215 respectively. According to the AQI scale, a reading between 50 and 100 is considered ‘moderate’, with generally acceptable air quality, though sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. AQI levels of 101–150 are ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, 151–200 is ‘unhealthy’, 201–300 is ‘very unhealthy’, and readings above 301 are considered ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks. A truck collision in Jhenaidah city’s Pobhati Kalarhat area on Friday night left one young man dead and another seriously injured. The accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. when a truck hit a motorcycle. The deceased has been identified as Shanto Shahriar Rahman Shanto (31), son of Shahin Rahman of Arappur area. His friend, Titon, son of Abdus Sattar of Bayaripara, was seriously injured in the crash. Officer-in-Charge of Arappur Highway Police, Mrityunjoy Biswas, confirmed the incident, saying Shanto died at the scene while Titon was critically injured. Titon has been rushed to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment, and his condition is reported to be critical.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, delivering a significant setback to a central pillar of his economic agenda. In a 6-3 ruling, the court said Trump’s use of an emergency powers law to impose wide-ranging import duties, including so-called “reciprocal” tariffs on nearly all countries, was unconstitutional because the authority to levy taxes rests with Congress, not the president. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the framers did not assign any part of the taxing power to the executive branch. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented, arguing the tariffs were legally permissible, though their policy merits could be debated. Reacting to the decision, Trump called it “deeply disappointing” and criticised the justices who voted against the tariffs. The ruling marks the first major element of his broad economic agenda to be squarely rejected by the high court. The court did not clarify whether businesses that paid billions of dollars in tariffs would receive refunds, noting the process could be complicated. Federal data show the Treasury collected over $133 billion from the import taxes by December, with long-term impacts projected to reach trillions. However, the decision does not prevent the administration from pursuing tariffs under other statutory authorities, though those come with stricter limits. Meghmallar Bosu, president of Dhaka University unit of the Student Union (one faction), has been admitted to hospital after reportedly taking multiple medicines at once. He is currently undergoing treatment. Bosu was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical in the capital shortly after midnight on Thursday. He was later referred to another hospital. Maeen Ahmed, general secretary of the DU committee of the Student Union (one faction), confirmed the information and said, “His recovery is ongoing.” He added, “After receiving the news, we went to Suhrawardy Medical around 2–3 am. Later, when he was referred to another hospital, he was taken there.” Quoting doctors, he said, “He is currently regaining consciousness.” Regarding the cause of his illness, he said, “He had been somewhat unwell earlier and was suffering from anxiety. He was found after taking multiple medicines. He will be able to provide details himself once he fully recovers.”

Business leaders in Bauphal upazila shut shops on Friday after alleged extortionists threatened to kill them for refusing to pay regular tolls. The president of the Kalaiya Daspara Construction Materials Owners Association, Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, was first threatened on Thursday. Traders later filed a written complaint with the police that evening. On Friday, the group’s general secretary Masud Rana was also threatened with a sharp weapon. Locals and shop owners confronted the suspect, who then fled the scene. In protest, traders closed shops from 10:30am to 1:30pm. The strike was withdrawn after newly elected MP Shafiqul Islam Masud visited the area and promised legal action against those involved. Traders alleged that Shanto Pyada, 22, son of Daspara Union BNP Ward No. 2 general secretary Sohrab Hossain Pyada, 55, along with a few others, regularly collected extortion money. Talking to traders, it was learned that there are 32 shops in the Daspara bus stand area on the west side of the Kalaiya Dhanhat Bridge. They said they bring rods, cement, sand and stones by trawlers and cargo vessels from different parts of the country. At least 15 to 20 trawlers and cargo vessels arrive there every day. Traders alleged they were forced to pay Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500 per vessel as extortion. Association general secretary Masud Rana said they decided in an emergency meeting on Wednesday evening to stop paying extortion. He said Shanto Pyada became angry over the decision. On Thursday morning, when Shanto came to collect money, association president Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury refused to pay. Shanto then openly threatened to kill him, Masud Rana said. Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury confirmed the incident and said Shanto always carries weapons. He said they are living in fear and demanded his immediate arrest. Attempts to contact Shanto failed. His father, BNP leader Sohrab Hossain Pyada, said he had taken a water body lease for Tk 40,000 from Daspara Union BNP president Ali Azam Chowdhury. He claimed that his son collected Tk 200 per trawler and said it was not extortion. However, sources at the Upazila Land Office and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer office said the Kalaiya and Daspara canals had not been leased to anyone. BNP leader Ali Azam Chowdhury could not be reached as his mobile phone was switched off. Assistant Superintendent of Police Arif Muhammad Shakur said he had spoken to the MP and that legal action would be taken soon against those involved.  

A tragic road accident in Jamalpur claimed the lives of a father and son on Friday, prompting locals to block the road in protest. The victims were Delwar Hossain (60) and his son Istiak Ahmed (30) of Kenduar Char area in Sherpur Sadar. According to police, the accident occurred around 1:00 pm near the Sherpur Bridge on the Jamalpur-Sherpur regional highway. During routine traffic checking by transport police, a truck traveling toward Sherpur was stopped. At that moment, a motorcycle tried to bypass the checkpoint, but was struck by another truck coming from the opposite direction. Both father and son died on the spot. Enraged locals blocked the road to protest the incident. The transport police on duty retreated in the face of the demonstration. Jamalpur Sadar police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman confirmed the accident and said additional police were quickly deployed to control the situation. He added that legal action regarding the incident is underway.

Khairul Kabir Khokon, Member of Parliament for Narsingdi-1 (Sadar) and BNP Joint Secretary General, has warned unscrupulous traders against creating artificial shortages or hiking prices during Ramadan. He said strict action will be taken against anyone found violating these rules. Speaking to reporters on Friday afternoon after monitoring the Narsingdi Boro Bazar, Khokon said the administration is vigilant to ensure people can observe the holy month peacefully without financial hardship. We want people to fast peacefully. I have instructed consumer rights authorities and the administration to continue regular monitoring so that no one can exploit the public, he added. Earlier, Khokon visited various wholesale and retail shops in the market, checking the prices and stock levels of essential commodities. During the inspection, he directed traders to display price lists properly and sell goods at fair prices. Officials from the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate and members of law enforcement were present during the monitoring exercise.

Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), on Friday urged trader leaders to keep prices of essential commodities at a tolerable level during the holy month of Ramadan. He made the call while briefing journalists at Moulvibazar under Chawkbazar police station in the capital on Friday afternoon. The DMP Commissioner said that along with controlling prices during Ramadan, no adulteration of food items would be tolerated, stressing the need for vigilance and caution in this regard. Addressing traders, he said full cooperation must be extended when magistrates of the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate conduct market drives, which would help ensure transparency and fair pricing. He also sought cooperation from all trader leaders to maintain market discipline. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Amin Ur Rashid on Friday said ensuring the welfare of farmers and marginal people is one of the main election pledges of the current government. He said improving the lives of farmers and marginal communities will help uplift the living standards of the country’s largest population group and strengthen the national economy. The minister made the remarks while speaking at a meeting with officials of the fisheries and livestock, agriculture and food ministry departments of the Cumilla region at the Cumilla Circuit House conference room. He said people have placed their trust in the current government to work for the overall welfare of the country and its citizens, especially hardworking people and farmers. He added that the government  has given the highest priority to agriculture as around 70 percent of the population is directly or indirectly linked to the sector. The minister said development of agriculture will strengthen the financial base of a large section of people and make the national economy more resilient. Addressing field-level officials, he urged them to raise farmers’ awareness about soil health, pH levels, efficient use of fertilisers and modern technology. He said maintaining proper soil pH can significantly reduce fertiliser use and production costs. He stressed the need for officials to give direct advice and guidance to farmers at the grassroots level. Although he recently took oath as a minister, he said he has long been directly involved in farming and has first-hand experience of the sector’s challenges and potential. He noted that agriculture production, storage, food management, fisheries and livestock were previously run separately, creating coordination gaps. Steps have now been taken to bring these sectors under an integrated framework, in line with the government’s latest policy direction. The minister said while governments serve for fixed terms, field-level officials remain in service for much longer. Commerce, Industry and Textile and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Thursday said the government has adequate food stocks to keep the market stable during the upcoming month of Ramadan. He said one of the key responsibilities of the Ministry of Commerce is to keep prices of essential commodities stable, and this duty becomes more important during Ramadan. “Although there was no time to take special steps after assuming office, the existing stock situation is positive and sufficient to maintain price stability,” he added. The minister made the remarks while replying to journalists after exchanging greetings with officials of different government departments and party leaders at Osmani International Airport. Responding to a question on development plans for Sylhet, he said he had highlighted these plans during his long election campaign and in the election manifesto. He said the he wants to work on issues directly linked to improving the living standards of people in Sylhet. He said priority will be given to job creation, expansion of IT-related professions and the establishment of an AI centre in the region. The minister said Bangladesh must build capacity to compete globally. Over the next five years, the government will use every day effectively to move the country forward in the global arena with sincerity. Replying to a question on job creation at the Sylhet IT park, he said investment is essential to create employment. He said special policy support is needed for expatriate and local investors in Sylhet, adding that work is underway and visible progress will be seen soon. Among others, Sylhet-3 MP MA Malek, Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi, Range DIG Md Mushfekur Rahman, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, the acting president of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, and other party leaders were present at the time.

A mobile court in Keraniganj conducted a market drive on Friday afternoon to keep prices of essential commodities under control during Ramadan, fining 15 shop owners and sealing two meat shops for irregularities. The mobile court was carried out at Zinzira Bazar under Keraniganj Model Police Station area to strengthen market monitoring and prevent overpricing. Officials collected around Tk 20,000 in fines from 15 shops for various violations, including selling goods at higher prices and failing to display price lists. During the drive, one beef shop and one poultry shop were temporarily sealed for ignoring government instruction and not displaying the approved price list. The operation was led by Keraniganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Umar Faruq and Assistant Commissioner (Land & Revenue) South Keraniganj Aftab Uddin Ahmed. The UNO said Ramadan is a month of restraint and compassion, and the administration remains strict to prevent unscrupulous traders from creating artificial shortages, overcharging customers or selling adulterated products. He added that such drives will continue throughout Ramadan to ensure market discipline, transparency and stable prices of daily essentials. Authorities said the mobile court drives will continue throughout Ramadan to keep prices of essential commodities stable and ensure transparency and discipline in the market in line with consumer rights protections. Aftab Uddin Ahmed said regular market monitoring is being carried out and immediate legal action will be taken against any kind of wrongdoings. He urged traders to properly display and follow the government-approved price lists, ensure accurate weights of products and maintain hygienic conditions while selling goods.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Friday stressed the need to keep prices of essential commodities at a tolerable level during the holy month of Ramadan and ensure security for all, regardless of political affiliation. She made the remarks at a views-exchange meeting with government officials at the deputy commissioner’s conference room in Faridpur. Saying that her party wants to serve people as a public servant, the state minister urged the administration to remain vigilant so that no mob situation or deterioration in law and order occurs. Addressing the district and police administrations, Shama Obaed said a hardline approach must be taken against real offenders whenever law and order worsens, without considering political identity. Local residents blocked the Dhaka–Bogura highway in Shahjahanpur on Friday morning, placing the body of a housewife killed in a road accident on the road and demanding deployment of traffic police at the accident-prone spot. The blockade took place at Lichutola Second Bypass intersection in Shahjahanpur Upazila, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the highway. The demonstrators withdrew the blockade after about an hour. The deceased was identified as Chameli Begum, 35, wife of Jewel from Betgari South Para village. According to local sources and police, Chameli and three members of her family were critically injured when a bus collided with an easy-bike at the Lichutola Second Bypass intersection on Wednesday afternoon. They were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where Chameli died around 2am on Friday while undergoing treatment. Her two-year-old child, Soaed, also injured in the crash, had one leg amputated through surgery and is now receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After news of her death spread, locals gathered at the bypass intersection around 10am with the body and blocked both lanes of the highway, creating traffic congestion stretching several kilometres. The protesters demanded immediate deployment of traffic police and construction of a foot overbridge at the accident-prone intersection. Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mostafa Manjur said the situation was brought under control following police intervention and assurances from the MP of Bogura-4 constituency. Traffic movement on the highway has since returned to normal.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan on Friday vowed to build a drug free and terror free country, after efforts to ensure an education system without cheating in exams. He said the anti-drug and anti-terror drive will begin from Kachua, just as the anti-cheating movement once started from the same area and later became a national model. The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists during his first visit to his constituency Kachua in Chandpur after taking charge. He said Kachua will be turned into a drug free, terror free and eve-teasing free upazila in phases. Effective steps will be taken through coordination among the administration, law enforcement agencies and local representatives. “Kachua once set an example across the country as a cheating free area. We now want Kachua to become the model for a drug free and terror free Bangladesh,” he said. The minister also said there are plans to start the journey towards a corruption free society from Kachua. He said the future Bangladesh will be built under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and all announced programmes will be implemented step by step. Everything in place for 'fair, transparent and smooth' SSC exams: Education Minister Milon ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan was elected from Chandpur-1 seat with a large margin in the 13th national election. After taking oath, he was appointed education minister and minister for primary and mass education. Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Md Nazmul Islam Sarkar, Superintendent of Police Md Rabiul Hasan and other senior officials of the administration and law enforcement agencies were present.

Local residents formed a human chain and brought out a protest procession in Bauphal of Patuakhali on Thursday, demanding swift arrest and capital punishment for those involved in the brutal killing of Sakil Mridha. The hour-long human chain was held around 3:30pm on Milghar Road in Adabaria union of Bauphal, with participation from the victim’s relatives, neighbours and locals. A protest march later paraded different roads of the union and ended at the same spot. Speakers termed the incident a premeditated and heinous murder and called for a fair and speedy trial. They warned of tougher protests if the killers are not arrested immediately and given exemplary punishment. Police recovered the body of Sakil Mridha, 25, with hands and feet tied from a pond in the Milghar area on Monday afternoon and later confirmed his identity. He managed ticket counters of Dhaka-bound Moon Paribahan and Chairman Paribahan and was the son of the late Sobhan Mridha of Mahashraddi village. The victim’s elder brother Advocate Siddikur Rahman filed a murder case with Bauphal Police Station against unnamed suspects. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Siddikur Rahman said one person has been detained and drives are underway to identify and arrest others involved.

Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah, elected from Cumilla-4 constituency, has said he will serve people of all religions equally during the next five years. Speaking Friday at the 21st reunion of Bangladesh Sebashram Jubo Songho in Debidwar, he said his responsibility is not only to Muslims but to everyone. He urged citizens to cooperate with him, saying he cannot succeed without their support. He said, while religious beliefs may differ, social, cultural, and economic harmony is common for all. No compromise on Nasiruddin Patwary issue: Hasnat He added that religion, caste, or ethnicity will not influence his work, and he will provide equal services to all citizens. The event concluded with a procession organized by the Sebashram Jubo Songho under the slogan "Satya Seba Dharma," which paraded through the town’s streets. The government has reportedly allocated portfolios to eight advisers appointed to PM Tarique Rahman with the status of minister and state minister. Officials said the responsibilities were assigned through a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Friday. According to the notification, among the five advisers holding the status of minister, Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed have been appointed as Political Advisers. Besides, Md Ismail Zabiyullah has been given charge of the Ministry of Public Administration, while Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir will oversee the Ministry of Finance. Among the advisers holding the status of state minister, Brig Gen (retd) Shamsul Islam has been assigned the Ministry of Defence. Mahdi Amin has been entrusted with the Ministry of Education; Ministry of Primary and Mass Education; Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment; and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Meanwhile, Rehan Asif Asad has been given charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Earlier, 10 advisers were appointed on Tuesday.

Ukraine will boycott the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics on March 6 due to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national flags, the country’s Paralympic Committee said. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) allocated 10 slots for Russian and Belarusian athletes, sparking protests from Ukraine over the ongoing war. Ukraine called the move “disappointing and outrageous” and demanded that its flag not be used at the ceremony. Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi confirmed officials will boycott the event, though Ukrainian athletes will still compete. The country’s skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych criticized the IPC for allowing athletes supporting the war to carry their flags. Russia has two slots each in Para alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while Belarus received four places in cross-country skiing. Ukraine said neither country went through the qualification process and condemned their inclusion amid the “horrific military aggression” in Ukraine. At least one person was killed and 11 others injured when Yemeni security forces fired on protesters linked to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) who tried to storm the al-Maashiq Presidential Palace in Aden, an Al Jazeera correspondent reported. The incident occurred Thursday during the first session of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, led by Prime Minister Shaya Mohsen al-Zindani, amid opposition demonstrations. Footage obtained by Al Jazeera showed several wounded individuals at the site. The Aden Governorate Security Committee said security forces responded lawfully to armed protesters attempting acts of sabotage and warned against any attacks on personnel. The STC, backed by the United Arab Emirates, claimed at least 21 people were wounded, condemning the use of live ammunition and calling for an investigation. The group urged the international community to act against “systematic repression” in southern Yemen. Earlier, the STC had controlled Aden and much of southern Yemen until a Saudi-backed government offensive pushed them back in January. On Friday, the STC refused to recognise the new government in Aden, calling it a “de facto authority” without political or popular support and warning that any official presence in the south would not bind southern representatives politically. Yemen has faced ongoing conflict and instability since Houthi rebels seized much of the country, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014. Ukraine has voiced growing frustration over US-backed peace efforts with Russia, saying Washington is putting heavy pressure on Kyiv while failing to apply the same level of pressure on Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the latest round of talks had not delivered acceptable results for Ukraine. In a video address to the nation on Wednesday, he said the outcome so far was insufficient. Ahead of talks held in Geneva this week, Zelenskyy rejected Russian demands that Ukraine hand over the remaining parts of the eastern Donetsk region not under Russian control. He said Ukrainians would never accept giving up more land, warning that such a move would not be forgiven by the public. Russia currently controls about 19 percent of Ukrainian territory, down from around 26 percent in early 2022, according to estimates. Recent opinion polls show a majority of Ukrainians strongly oppose ceding Donetsk to Russia, even in exchange for security guarantees. Many also doubt the current US-led negotiations will bring lasting peace. Zelenskyy has instead suggested freezing the current front line as a basis for a ceasefire, followed by negotiations. He said such an approach could gain public support if put to a referendum. US President Donald Trump has said Ukraine is holding up a peace deal, a claim Zelenskyy called unfair. He said he hoped the US stance was part of negotiating tactics rather than a fixed position. Several US senators visiting Ukraine recently said Washington should increase pressure on Russia. They argued that Moscow is not negotiating in good faith and continues to use force during talks. On the same day as the Geneva discussions, Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said the strikes damaged power and heating supplies and showed Russia’s lack of interest in peace. Zelenskyy again urged Western allies to tighten sanctions on Russian energy exports and stop the flow of critical components to Russia through third countries. Ukraine says Russia continues to rely on a large shadow fleet of oil tankers to bypass sanctions. Despite ongoing fighting, Ukrainian officials say their forces have made recent gains in eastern and central regions. Military observers report that Ukrainian troops reclaimed territory in mid-February, marking one of their fastest advances since 2023. European allies have pledged increased military and financial support to Ukraine this year, including funding for drone production and weapons supplies. The European Union has also approved new financial assistance packages. Amar Ekushey: Nation to pay tribute to language martyrs at zero hour He said their sacrifices marked the first step towards the liberation of the then East Bengal from long oppression and domination, and strengthened the foundation of Bangalees’ rights, democracy and cultural identity. “The path of Ekushey eventually led to the Liberation War and the independence of Bangladesh.” Tarique said Bangla is the main carrier of national identity and that UNESCO recognised February 21 as International Mother Language Day in honour of the nation’s sacrifice and love for the mother tongue. “The spirit of Ekushey has now turned into a global movement to protect linguistic dignity.” He said the government wants to build a self-reliant, safe and humane democratic state by upholding the aspirations of language martyrs, the martyrs of 1971 and all those who sacrificed their lives in democratic movements over the years. The Prime Minister called for preserving the country’s language diversity and ensuring proper use and practice of Bangla at all levels while safeguarding culture and heritage. He prayed for the salvation of all language martyrs and wished success of all programmes taken marking the Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

Israeli authorities have imposed tight restrictions on Palestinian access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem for the first Friday prayers of Ramadan, allowing only a limited number of worshippers from the occupied West Bank to enter. Israel said a maximum of 10,000 Palestinians from the West Bank would be permitted to attend prayers on Friday, far fewer than the hundreds of thousands who traditionally gather at the site during Ramadan in previous years. Entry is being allowed only with special permits. According to the restrictions, only children under 12, men over the age of 55 and women aged 50 and above are eligible to enter Jerusalem from the West Bank for the prayers. From early morning, hundreds of Palestinians queued at the Qalandiya checkpoint, hoping to reach the holy site. Israeli media reported that by mid-morning only about 2,000 people had managed to cross, amid heightened Israeli military alert at checkpoints separating the West Bank from East Jerusalem. Palestinian officials later said Israeli authorities claimed the daily quota for West Bank worshippers had already been filled, effectively barring further entry to the mosque compound. Palestinian journalists and officials said the restrictions were unprecedented in scale. In previous years, up to 250,000 worshippers have attended Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa during Ramadan, including Palestinians from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Palestinian citizens of Israel. Observers say the measures are deepening the separation between occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank, disrupting long-standing religious and social traditions linked to Ramadan prayers and communal gatherings at Al-Aqsa. The restrictions come amid rising violence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinian authorities, human rights groups and the United Nations have reported an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers, often under the protection of Israeli forces, involving shootings, home burnings and land seizures. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since 2023, while over 10,000 have been forcibly displaced. Earlier this week, Israel approved a plan that Palestinian officials and international critics describe as a de facto annexation of large areas of the occupied West Bank by declaring them Israeli “state property”. Rising tensions between the United States and Iran have highlighted deep contradictions in President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, as he calls for peace while simultaneously threatening military action against Tehran. Speaking at a meeting of the Board of Peace, a Middle East coalition he helped form, Trump issued his latest warning to Iran, underscoring the clash between diplomacy and force that has defined much of his second term. While he has said he prefers a negotiated deal to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, the White House has also sharply increased pressure, both rhetorically and militarily. US officials say Iran would be “very wise” to reach an agreement, but at the same time Washington has overseen what analysts describe as the largest US military buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq War. Warships, fighter jets and other assets have been deployed near Iran, fuelling fears of a major escalation. Trump’s threats are being taken seriously, particularly after the US followed through on military action against Venezuela earlier this year, an operation that ended with the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro. Unlike that strike, however, Washington’s objectives in Iran remain unclear. The US president insists that last year’s strike on Iran “obliterated” its nuclear facilities, but has not explained why further military action may now be necessary, what new targets would be hit, or what the broader political goal would be. Iran, weakened by sanctions and internal protests against its leadership under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has signalled openness to talks on uranium enrichment. But negotiations have stalled, largely over US demands that Tehran also limit its ballistic missile programme and support for regional proxy groups. Yet since taking office, he has authorised military actions in Syria, Venezuela, Iran and the Caribbean. A large-scale air campaign against Iran could alienate some supporters ahead of the US midterm elections, particularly as voters express frustration over issues such as immigration and the economy. It could also clash with Trump’s repeated claims that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for ending multiple wars, a claim widely disputed. Despite the uncertainty, Trump appears comfortable keeping allies and adversaries guessing. He has embraced the image of a global dealmaker, hosting high-profile summits and presiding over negotiations on trade, security and diplomacy. Police continued searching Royal Lodge for a second day on Friday as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was released under investigation following his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. More unmarked police vehicles were seen arriving at the Windsor property, which is Andrew’s former residence, as officers pressed on with their inquiry. Police searches linked to the case have already ended in Norfolk but are ongoing in Berkshire, according to authorities. Andrew was arrested on Thursday and held for around 11 hours before being released under investigation. This means he faces no restrictions on his movement while police continue their inquiries. He was later photographed returning to the Sandringham estate. The arrest, first reported by the BBC, followed an assessment by Thames Valley Police of a complaint alleging that Andrew shared confidential material with late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his time as a UK trade envoy. Police sources said the investigation is not limited to a small number of emails already reported in the media and could involve a wider review of documents. Buckingham Palace has said it will cooperate fully with the investigation. Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. He has not responded to specific BBC questions related to millions of Epstein-related documents released earlier this year. He has not been charged. King Charles III, who was not informed in advance of the arrest, said he learned of the development with deep concern and stressed that the law must take its course. Political reaction followed swiftly. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said no one is above the law, while opposition figures called for the police to be allowed to complete their work without interference. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday pledged sweeping changes to the country’s economy and capital markets, vowing that a 'revolutionary transformation' is on the way. Talking to reporters at Shah Amanat International Airport as he arrived in Chattogram after assuming office, Khosru said the government would move away from patronage-based politics and pursue reforms aimed at restoring confidence in the economy and the stock market. “In the coming days, there will be a revolutionary change in the country’s stock market and economy,” he said. The upcoming national budget would not be a conventional one, signalling a break from past approaches, the minister said. Khosru said the government has worked out multiple plans to recover funds siphoned off abroad and would prioritise economic uplift. Employment generation would remain at the centre of policy efforts, as job creation is currently the country’s 'biggest problem', he said. Khosru emphasised that Chattogram, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s commercial hub, would be developed further as a trade centre through increased investment and modernisation of port operations. "The development of Chattogram means the development of the country,” he said, adding that employment and investment growth would guide policy direction. He said steps would be taken to upgrade port infrastructure and create an investment-friendly environment, with the aim of positioning Chattogram as a regional and international trade centre. Port modernisation, infrastructure development and investment facilitation would receive particular focus. Later, in the day, addressing a meeting of port users at his residence in Mehedibag, the minister said he had instructed relevant authorities to ensure that activities centred around Chittagong Port Authority do not contribute to higher commodity prices, especially during Ramadan. Following the meeting, Khosru told journalists that certain port-related factors were contributing to price increases ultimately borne by consumers. He said the government would identify the causes of rising prices and take corrective measures through inter-ministerial coordination. The nation is set to observe 'Amar Ekushey', the Language Martyr's Day and the International Mother Language Day early Saturday, marking the supreme sacrifice of the language heroes for upholding the dignity of the mother tongue, Bangla. The day will also be observed around the world as UNESCO recognised Ekushey February as the International Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999. On February 21, 1952, students and common people in Dhaka took to the streets in protest against the then Pakistani government's denial of Bangla as the national language and imposition of Urdu as the only official language of Pakistan. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar and a few other brave sons of the soil were killed in police firings on this day in 1952 when students came out in a procession from the Dhaka University campus breaching section 144 to press home their demand for the recognition of Bangla as a state language of then Pakistan. The day is a public holiday. In a message the eve of the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to all Bangla-speaking people as well as speakers of all languages and ethnic groups across the world. “The movement to protect the mother tongue not only established linguistic rights but also strengthened the foundations of the Bengali people’s struggle for self-rule, democracy and cultural identity. Following the blood-stained path of February 21, the nation eventually achieved independence through the great Liberation War,” he said. The Prime Minister said the government aims to build a self-reliant, secure, humane and democratic state by upholding the aspirations of all martyrs, including the language martyrs, those who laid down their lives in the Liberation War of 1971, the struggle to protect independence in 2024, and all democratic movements in the country. He called upon all concerned to work together to uphold the dignity of all languages across the world. DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali said on Friday that around 15,000 police personnel would be deployed in and around the Central Shaheed Minar to ensure the safe and orderly observance of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day. No security threat around Ekushey February programmes: DMP Commissioner He was speaking after inspecting security arrangements at the memorial, where large crowds are expected to gather to pay tribute to the language martyrs. There is no security threat surrounding this year’s Ekushey February observance in the capital, he said. National dailies will publish supplements, marking the day, while Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television and private radio stations and television channels will air special programmes on the occasion.

Executive Director of Bangladesh Center for Indo-Pacific Affairs Prof Shahab Enam Khan has said Bangladesh should pursue a ‘no-exclusive-alignment’ policy, engaging constructively with India, China and the United States, the three major global powers reshaping the geopolitical and economic landscapes. “But it should avoid any security arrangement that looks like basing, bloc politics, or single-partner dependence,” he told UNB when asked how should the new government recalibrate its foreign policy to maintain strategic balance among India, China and the United States. “Bangladesh First will be the core philosophy of our foreign policy,” said Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, adding, “We aim to maintain good relations with all countries, especially our neighbors, based on respect and mutual benefit.” In his first reaction to the media, the Foreign Minister said they want to get back to the foreign policy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman which was very positive and expansive, stressing that the government wants to maintain a good relationship with each country while at the same time protecting the country’s interests. Dhaka’s Relations with Delhi Following the formation of the new government, the relations between Dhaka and Delhi have entered a cautiously optimistic phase, marked by renewed goodwill from both sides, foreign affairs experts say. A significant gesture underscoring this positive momentum was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending an invitation to Tarique Rahman, signaling openness to constructive political engagement, a diplomat told UNB. “Reciprocity, transactionality and pragmatism should be the key approach in Bangladesh-India relations, with red lines on sovereignty and security,” Prof Shahab, a global policy expert, told UNB. He said both should create a rules-based framework that includes regular leader-level dialogue, a prudent mechanism to prevent border incidents, transparent agreements on trade, transit, water and faster dispute resolution. The foreign affairs expert also highlighted the importance of deeper energy-grid and connectivity cooperation in place that benefits both sides, while keeping politics out of operational coordination. “Both sides should focus on countering misinformation and disinformation campaigns,” said Prof Shahab, flagging the issue that hurts any relationship. Regionalised Approach Asked what realistic diplomatic pathway should Bangladesh pursue to ensure safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar, given prolonged stalemate and shifting regional geopolitics, Prof Shahab said Bangladesh must pursue a regionalised approach by building a coalition with ASEAN, China, India, Pakistan, and key Western partners. He highlighted the importance of stabilising Rakhine through trade and investment to create an environment for returns based on economic opportunities. “We need to shift from a fully humanitarian-driven to a trade-and-investment-driven approach, with international monitoring and verified conditions in Rakhine,” Prof Shahab said. Despite the passage of eight years, the plight of the Rohingyas remains largely unchanged and the prolonged crisis has deepened despair within the camps and placed an increasing burden on host communities, while global attention and funding continue to wane. Market-Access Diplomacy Responding to a question on economic diplomacy, Prof Shahab said Bangladesh should move away from symbolism to market-access diplomacy. “It should make EU GSP+/EPA the top priority, lock in UK preference continuity, and build a pragmatic US pathway which should include investment, standards, sectoral arrangements,” he said. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said Bangladesh has issues and challenges with all countries, which will be addressed through discussions at bilateral and multilateral forums. “We want to look forward, keeping our backbone strong and straight. That backbone has now become stronger after a long time as the government came through people’s mandate. All now need to look at Bangladesh from a different perspective,” she told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sharing how the foreign policy of a democratic government should be.

An inmate at Dhaka Central Jail died after falling ill, officials said on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Abdul Khaleque, 65, son of the late Kafil Uddin. Prison guard Abdullah said Khalek fell ill inside the jail. On the instructions of the authorities, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 00:30am, where doctors declared him dead. Khaleque’s prison identification number was 6718/A. Officials did not disclose the nature of the case in which he had been imprisoned. Inmate dies after falling ill at Dhaka Central Jail Inspector Md Faruk, who is in charge of the police camp at the hospital, said the body has been kept in the morgue for a post-mortem examination. A medico-legal report will be prepared in the presence of an executive magistrate. Once the necessary formalities are completed by the prison authorities, the body will be handed over to his family.

An auto-rickshaw driver was killed as a pickup hit his vehicle near Azimpur Orphanage in Lalbagh in Dhaka. The deceased identified as Amzad Hossain, 68, from Jainki village in Dohar upazila of Dhaka. His son, Sakib, said his father left home in the morning as usual to drive his auto-rickshaw. “A fast-moving pickup struck my father’s vehicle and fled the spot. He was severely injured and later died,” he said. Hossain was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition where doctors declared him dead. Inspector of DMCH police camp Md. Faruk said the body has been kept in the morgue and police have been informed for further investigation.

Thousands of Muslims poured into the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram on the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan to offer Juma prayers in an atmosphere marked by devotion, restraint and spiritual reflection.

No one will be allowed to hold the general public hostage or create public suffering in the name of movements or demands, said RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman on Friday. All necessary measures will be taken to ensure uninterrupted movement and daily life of ordinary people, he told reporters while visiting the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital to inspect RAB’s security arrangements. The RAB DG said there is currently no specific security threat centring the observance of Language Martyrs Day but all necessary preparations have been taken to deal with any possible situation. Adequate security measures have already ensured not only at the Central Shaheed Minar but also at all Shaheed Minars across the country where people will pay tributes, he said. Shahidur said comprehensive preparations have been taken to ensure the smooth observance of International Mother Language Day. In coordination with other law enforcement agencies, a central security ring has been established around the Shaheed Minar area, he added. He said inner and outer perimeters have been designated, with RAB members deployed accordingly. The entire area has been divided into several sectors, with foot patrols, vehicle patrols and striking reserves assigned to each sector, he said. No security threat around Ekushey February programmes: DMP Commissioner To strengthen security, bomb disposal units, dog squads and intelligence personnel in plain clothes will be deployed, he said, adding that more than 300 RAB members will remain on duty at the Shaheed Minar area. The entire area has also been brought under CCTV surveillance. The RAB chief further said law enforcement agencies have succeeded in restoring stability from previously fragile law and order situations and ensuring a conducive environment for holding a free and fair election.  He said the forces will continue to maintain maximum vigilance to further improve law and order and control crime.

He was speaking after inspecting security arrangements at the memorial, where large crowds are expected to gather to pay tribute to the language martyrs. The commissioner said a multi-layered security plan had been put in place, involving police, other law enforcement agencies and volunteers, to maintain discipline and preserve the sanctity of the site. Referring to the recently held national election, he said voters had exercised their franchise peacefully and in a disciplined manner, without security concerns.  He expressed confidence that the Ekushey February programmes would also pass off without incident. DMP to provide escort service for transport of cash and valuables ahead of ramadan, Eid In addition to regular police deployment, specialised units, including SWAT, the dog squad, the bomb disposal unit and the crime scene team, will remain on standby around the clock, he said.  Intelligence surveillance and cyber monitoring have also been strengthened. Responding to a question, Sajjat Ali said security measures were not limited to the Shaheed Minar area, adding that police remained vigilant across the capital. He also outlined movement guidelines for visitors. Entry to the Shaheed Minar will be permitted only through the Palashi Mor–Jagannath Hall crossing route. Visitors must exit via the Romana crossing towards Doel Chattar or Chankharpool. No alternative routes will be allowed. Members of the public have been urged not to carry sharp objects, flammable materials or explosives, and to follow the designated entry and exit routes.  Visitors have also been requested to maintain discipline and leave promptly after paying tribute to allow others to enter. For security and traffic management, diversions will be enforced at entry points to the Dhaka University area from Friday evening.  Teachers, students, officers and employees residing in the area have been asked to cooperate by following traffic instructions.

Commerce  Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on Friday said the government has adequate stocks of essential commodities to keep market prices stable during the holy month of Ramadan. “The main responsibility of the Ministry of Commerce is to ensure price stability of essential food items. This responsibility becomes even more important during Ramadan,” he told reporters in Sylhet.  The minister said when the current government assumed office, there was little scope to take special measures ahead of Ramadan.  “However, the positive aspect is that the amount of food stock we currently have is sufficient to maintain price stability in the market,” he added. Minister Muktadir speaking to journalists at Sylhet Osmani International Airport after exchanging greetings with officials of different government departments and party leaders. Responding to a question on development plans for Sylhet, the minister said he had highlighted these issues throughout his election campaign and manifesto.  “We want to implement initiatives that are directly linked to improving the quality of life of the people of Sylhet,” he said, adding that priority would be given to employment generation, expansion of IT-related professions and the establishment of an AI centre. The minister also said the government would work sincerely over the next five years, utilising every single day to move Bangladesh forward in the global arena. Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz have successfully trained lab-grown brain organoids to solve a classic engineering challenge known as the inverted pendulum or cart-pole problem, marking the first rigorous academic demonstration of goal-directed learning in brain organoids. The cart-pole problem is often compared to balancing a ruler vertically in the palm of one’s hand, where constant attention and small adjustments are needed to keep it upright. In engineering, robotics and artificial intelligence, it is widely used as a benchmark to test whether a control system can learn, adapt and respond effectively to changing information. Every human infant, researchers note, must solve a similar problem while learning to stand and walk. In the new study, scientists trained tiny pieces of brain tissue grown in the laboratory, known as brain organoids, to balance a virtual pole by sending and receiving electrical signals. The work was led by Ash Robbins, a PhD student in electrical and computer engineering at UC Santa Cruz’s Baskin School of Engineering, alongside Professor Mircea Teodorescu and Distinguished Professor of Biomolecular Engineering David Haussler. Their findings were published in the journal Cell Reports. The research aims to better understand how neurons transmit information through electrical spikes in ways that allow learning and improvement. Such insights could help scientists study how neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke, concussion, autism, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, dyslexia and ADHD alter the brain’s ability to learn. “We are trying to understand the fundamentals of how neurons can be adaptively tuned to solve problems,” Robbins said. “If we can figure out what drives that in a dish, it gives us new ways to study how neurological disease can affect the brain’s ability to learn.” Brain organoids are small, three-dimensional tissues grown from stem cells that mimic early brain development, structure and function. Although smaller than a peppercorn, they can contain networks of several million neurons. For about 15 years, organoids of different organs have been widely used in biomedical research, but only recently have scientists begun exploring how brain organoids might be used to study learning. In this study, the researchers placed mouse-derived brain organoids on a specialized chip that allows them to record electrical activity from neurons and stimulate selected cells. Using electrical signals of varying strength, the team conveyed information about the angle of a virtual pole as it tipped in one direction or the other. In response, the organoid produced electrical activity that was translated into forces applied to the virtual cart, helping to balance the pole. Each attempt to balance the pole was treated as an episode. When the pole fell, the episode ended and a new one began. The goal was to keep the pole upright for as long as possible, similar to playing a video game. Rare smiling fossil found on Holy Island The organoid’s performance was evaluated in five-episode blocks. If its average performance over the most recent five episodes improved compared with the previous 20, no training signal was given. If performance did not improve, a training signal was applied. Importantly, this feedback was only delivered after an episode ended, not while the organoid was actively balancing the pole. An artificial intelligence method known as reinforcement learning was used to decide which neurons received training signals. Robbins compared the process to having an artificial coach that tells the system it is doing something wrong and nudges it to adjust. The results showed clear improvement. Organoids trained with adaptive reinforcement learning achieved a 46 percent “winning” rate, defined by a minimum time threshold for balancing the pole. In contrast, organoids that received random training signals achieved only a 4.5 percent winning rate. “When we can actively choose training stimuli, we can actually shape the network to solve the problem,” Robbins said. “What we showed is short-term learning. We can consistently shift an organoid from one state into another that we are aiming for.” However, the learning did not last. After about 15 minutes of training, the organoids were allowed to rest for 45 minutes. Following this rest period, performance dropped back to baseline, suggesting the organoids forgot most of what they had learned. Haussler said this limitation may be overcome in the future by developing more complex organoids. He suggested that tissues incorporating multiple brain regions involved in learning might be needed to reproduce the kind of long-term learning seen in animals. Independent experts say the findings are significant. Keith Hengen, an associate professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis who was not involved in the research, said the study shows that even minimal neural circuits can be guided toward solving real control problems when given targeted electrical feedback. “These are incredibly minimal neural circuits. There is no dopamine, no sensory experience, no body to sustain, no goals to pursue,” Hengen said. “Yet the tissue is plastic and structured enough to be pushed toward adaptive computation. This suggests that the capacity for learning is intrinsic to cortical tissue itself.” The research team, part of the Braingeneers group within the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, drew inspiration from earlier work conducted decades ago at Caltech and Georgia Tech by scientist Steve Potter. They used an electrophysiology system developed with industry partners at Maxwell Biosciences to communicate electrically with the organoids. From an engineering perspective, Professor Teodorescu said the study is powerful because it combines measurement, stimulation and adaptation in a single closed-loop system. He noted that this allows researchers to study learning as a physical process, something that is very difficult to do in intact brains. To support further research, Robbins developed an open-source software platform called BrainDance. The tool is designed to allow biologists to run complex neural learning experiments with organoids without needing to build custom games, hardware interfaces or training environments. “This software makes running very complicated experiments extremely easy,” Robbins said, adding that labs typically spend years developing such systems on their own. Preparing astronauts for Moon missions: challenges of isolation and survival Haussler emphasized that the goal of the research is to advance understanding of the brain and improve treatment of neurological diseases, not to replace traditional computers or robotic controllers with lab-grown brain tissue. He cautioned that such applications, especially involving human brain organoids, would raise serious ethical concerns. The researchers now plan to investigate why their coaching method works, which neurons are most effective to target, what kinds of training signals are best, and how long-term learning might eventually be achieved in lab-grown brain tissue. #From News-Medical

Over 10,000 fishermen in the Sundarbans have suspended their fishing activities amid growing fears of attacks by forest pirates, highlighting renewed security concerns in the region. Fishermen from Dubla Char, a key hub for dry-fish processing, stopped venturing into the sea and rivers from Wednesday evening after the reported abduction of 20 colleagues on Monday night. Microsoft has acknowledged a technical error that caused its artificial intelligence work assistant, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, to access and summarise some users’ confidential emails by mistake. Microsoft has promoted Copilot Chat as a secure AI tool for workplaces. However, the company said a recent issue allowed the tool to surface content from some enterprise users’ Outlook draft and sent email folders, including messages marked as confidential. The tech giant said it has now rolled out a global update to fix the problem and insisted that the error did not allow users to see information they were not already authorised to access. “We identified and addressed an issue where Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat could return content from emails labelled confidential authored by a user and stored within their Draft and Sent Items in Outlook desktop,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that while access controls and data protection policies remained in place, the behaviour did not match the intended Copilot experience. Copilot Chat works inside Microsoft programs such as Outlook and Teams, allowing users to ask questions or generate summaries of messages and chats. The issue was first reported by technology news site Bleeping Computer, which cited a Microsoft service alert stating that emails with confidential labels were being incorrectly processed by Copilot Chat. According to the alert, a work tab within Copilot summarised emails stored in users’ draft and sent folders, even when sensitivity labels and data loss prevention policies were in place. Russia blocks WhatsApp, urges citizens to switch to state-backed Max app Reports suggest Microsoft became aware of the issue in January. The notice was also shared on a support dashboard for NHS staff in England, where the root cause was described as a code issue. Six women who died in the deadliest avalanche in the United States in decades were part of a tight-knit group of close friends and seasoned backcountry skiers, their families said on Thursday. Lahore in Pakistan, Delhi in India, and Kolakata in India occupied the first, third, and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 320, 208, and 192 respectively. Dhaka records AQI 222, ranks third in world pollution index According to the AQI scale, a reading between 50 and 100 is considered ‘moderate’, with generally acceptable air quality, though sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. AQI levels of 101–150 are ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, 151–200 is ‘unhealthy’, 201–300 is ‘very unhealthy’, and readings above 301 are considered ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks. The AQI, which reports daily air quality, informs residents how clean or polluted the air is and highlights potential health effects. In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution. Air quality usually deteriorates in winter and improves during the monsoon season. A village doctor was stabbed to death by miscreants in Sharsha upazila of Jashore while returning home after offering prayers on Thursday night. The incident took place around 9:30 pm at Baripota village in Sharsha upazila. The deceased was identified as Al Amin, son of Rafiqul Islam of the Sharsha Navaron area. He was known locally as a village doctor and used to provide primary medical services in the area. According to police and local sources, Al Amin was on his way home after finishing prayers when a group of attackers suddenly assaulted him. They stabbed him with sharp weapons and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured. Locals found him lying on the road in a bloodied condition and rushed him to Sharsha Upazila Health Complex. The on duty doctor there declared him dead. After receiving the information, police rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control and started collecting evidence. 2 workers injured in Jashore bomb blast Inspector Shah Alam of Sharsha Police Station said police are gathering details of the incident. “We have started working to identify those involved and to find out the motive behind the killing,” he added.  

Hamas has been steadily reasserting control over the Gaza Strip in the months following a ceasefire with Israel, despite suffering heavy losses during the war, according to residents, traders and activists in the territory. The ceasefire, brokered under a US-backed initiative last October, brought an end to nearly two years of fighting that devastated Gaza Strip. Much of Gaza’s infrastructure was destroyed, large parts of the population were displaced, and more than 72,000 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Since the fighting subsided, local residents say Hamas has gradually restored its authority over security, taxation and basic government services. Police and internal security forces have returned to the streets, resuming patrols, controlling markets and pursuing those accused of collaboration or dissent. “Hamas has regained control over more than 90 percent of the areas where it operates,” said Gaza-based activist Mohammed Diab. He said residents are once again required to deal with Hamas-run institutions for identity documents, health services and legal matters, as the group moves to reassert influence over courts and the judiciary. Traders in markets across Gaza described a renewed enforcement of municipal fees and taxes. Several said Hamas authorities were aggressively collecting rent and levies at a time when livelihoods remain shattered. “They come every day with the same demands and threats,” said one displaced stallholder in Gaza City, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They say if we do not pay, they will throw us and our goods into the street. A female flower vendor was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle in the capital’s Shahbagh area on Thursday morning. The victim was identified as Mukta Akhter, 45, who used to sell flowers in the Shahbagh and Shaheed Minar areas, her relatives said. The accident occurred around 10:30 am in front of the gate of Dhaka Nursing College in Shahbagh when Mukta was getting off a rickshaw. A motorcycle hit her from behind, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted to the One Stop Emergency Centre. She succumbed to her injuries around noon while undergoing treatment. Inqilab Moncho protesters leave Shahbagh Mukta was the daughter of Ijar Ali of Noapara area in Jashore Sadar. She had been living with her family in a rented house in the Rani Market area of Kamrangirchar. Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the matter has been reported to the concerned police station. 

The United States has stepped up the movement of military aircraft and naval assets across Europe and towards the Middle East amid reports that President Donald Trump is weighing possible military action against Iran, while new satellite images indicate Tehran is reinforcing a sensitive military facility. Flight-tracking data reviewed by BBC Verify show a surge in US military aircraft activity, including refuelling tankers, surveillance planes and transport aircraft operating from bases in Spain, Greece and Italy and heading towards the eastern Mediterranean and Gulf region. Analysts say the scale and pace of these movements are unusually high and suggest preparations for large-scale air operations. Among the aircraft observed were KC-135 aerial refuelling tankers, E-3 surveillance jets and C-17 transport planes operated by the US Air Force. Data from Flightradar24 also indicated that HC-130J aircraft were flying from Europe to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a key hub for US operations in the region. At the same time, satellite imagery analysed by the Institute for Science and International Security shows Iran has added new layers of protection to a facility at the Parchin military site near Tehran. South Korea’s former president Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment for orchestrating an insurrection through an attempted imposition of martial law, a Seoul court ruled on Thursday. The court found that Yoon sought to undermine the constitution by deploying troops to block the National Assembly and ordering the arrest of politicians on December 3, 2024. Presiding judge Ji Gwi-yeon said the former leader’s actions gravely damaged South Korea’s democratic foundations and warranted the heaviest possible punishment short of execution. Prosecutors had demanded the death penalty. South Korea, however, has not carried out executions since 1997, meaning a death sentence would effectively amount to life imprisonment. The brief but dramatic martial law order deepened political polarisation across the country, tensions that were clearly visible during the sentencing. Large crowds of Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse ahead of the verdict, some chanting slogans in his favour and later breaking down in tears. At the same time, anti-Yoon protesters called for capital punishment. Yoon showed no visible reaction as the verdict was delivered. His legal team rejected the ruling, arguing it lacked evidentiary basis and accusing the court of following a predetermined outcome. If either side appeals, the case will move to the Supreme Court, potentially delaying a final decision for months. Yoon stunned the nation when he announced martial law in a live television address in December 2024, claiming it was necessary to counter “anti-state” forces sympathetic to North Korea. Investigators later concluded the move was driven largely by domestic political pressure, as the opposition-controlled parliament had rendered him a lame-duck president and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, faced corruption allegations. Lawmakers forced their way into the National Assembly within hours to overturn the order, prompting its swift withdrawal. Roads, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Thursday said money collected through mutual understanding among transport-related organisations cannot be termed extortion, which he defined as forced payment. Responding to journalists’ questions at a press briefing at the Secretariat in the afternoon, the minister said not all collections in the road transport sector should be labelled as extortion. He explained that owners’ associations and workers’ organisations collect money at fixed rates to run their welfare activities, which has long functioned as an unwritten practice. “When the money is given voluntarily, it cannot be called extortion. But if someone is compelled to pay, that is what should be considered extortion,” he said. The minister said owners’ associations collect funds with the intention of spending them on the welfare of vehicle owners. While there may be debates over whether the money is used properly, the collections are generally made through mutual understanding. He added that various organisations, including labour welfare federations, also collect funds in a similar manner, and acknowledged that labour bodies linked to the ruling party often wield greater influence. He made it clear that no one will be allowed to collect money by exerting pressure in areas under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. However, if owners collect money among themselves based on consensus, authorities will examine whether anyone is being deprived or whether the funds are being misused. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has formed a four-member committee to investigate corruption allegations against Mahbub Morshed, Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). The committee was formed to ensure a neutral, transparent and fair review of the allegations recently published in different media outlets. An Additional Secretary (Grade-1) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will lead the committee as its chair. The other members are the Chief Information Officer of the Department of Information, the Director General of the Mass Communication Department, and a Senior Assistant Secretary (Press-1) of the ministry, who will act as member secretary. The committee has been asked to submit a full report with recommendations to the ministry by February 25, 2026.  

Video footage captured by closed-circuit cameras at the polling stations of the recent general election and referendum would be preserved at the offices of assistant returning officers. The Election Commission has taken the decision to preserve the video footage of two days – the day before the voting and the voting day— with a view to using these as documents. The Commission on Thursday issued the directives to the 69 returning officers -– two divisional commissioners (Dhaka and Chattogram), three regional election officers (Dhaka, Chattogram and Khulna) and 64 Districts’ deputy commissioners—to store the video footage. The EC in a letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain asked the returning officers to preserve the video footage at the office of the assistant returning officers concerned. The 13th parliamentary election and referendum were held at 42,659 polling stations in 299 out of 300 constituencies across the country on February 12 last. Some 90 percent of the polling stations were under CC camera surveillance. Bangladesh election credible, genuinely competitive: EU Chief Observer On February 13 last, the EC published a gazette of 297 elected MP candidates. The election results of two other constituencies – Chattogram-2 and 4-- were withheld as per the court orders. Besides, the election to Sherpur-3 was earlier cancelled following the death of a contesting candidate. In the election, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 parliamentary seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68. Besides, National Citizen Party-NCP settled victory in six constituencies, independent candidates in seven constituencies, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish in two, Islami Andolan Bangladesh in one, Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP (led by Andaleeve Rahman Partho) in one, Ganaodhikar Parishad in one, Ganasamhati Andolan in one and Khelafat Majlish in one parliamentary seat. So, the BNP-led electoral alliance sealed victory in a total of 212 constituencies, while the Jamaat-led electoral alliance won in 77 constituencies.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon on Thursday said that instructions have been given to the authorities concerned to ensure the preparation and distribution of question papers of SSC examinations, without any irregularities or disruptions. All necessary preparations have been taken to ensure the upcoming Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations to be held in a fair, transparent and smooth manner, he said while talking to reporters after a meeting at the Education Ministry. The government has reiterated its strong commitment to ensuring accountability, strengthening oversight and carrying out time-befitting reforms in the education sector, he added. Referring to some past decisions—such as suspension of examinations and auto-pass measures—under special circumstances and were never intended as permanent solutions, the minister said that the ministry’s goal is to bring the education system under a modern, quality-driven and accountable framework. On the issue of politicisation of teachers and their participation in political programmes during class hours, the minister said teaching students is their primary responsibility. “Any demands can be resolved through discussion, but abandoning classrooms for street protests is unacceptable,” he said. He also assured that the government would address legitimate demands with due respect. Reaffirming the government’s zero tolerance against cheating, the minister expressed hope that strengthened ethics and study practices among students would eventually eliminate the need for anti-cheating drives. Talking about the disruption of education in coastal, char and haor areas due to floods and natural disasters Milon said special measures would be adopted considering local realities, including alternative arrangements where necessary. On reviewing and revising the national curriculum, the minister said preparations are underway with curriculum experts from the National Curriculum and Textbook Board. A decision on forming an Education Commission would be taken after discussions with the Prime Minister, he said. To ensure accountability in MPO-listed private educational institutions, necessary regulations and monitoring will be strengthened. The minister also said initiatives would be taken to reorganise and reinforce the functions of the National Teacher Registration and Certification Authority regarding teacher recruitment, transfer and discipline. English-medium institutions would gradually be brought under government policy frameworks, he said. No institution will be allowed to operate outside official regulations and running schools without proper registration or in temporary, unsafe infrastructures will not be permitted. Fire safety and structural standards will be made mandatory. Regarding allegations of irregularities in transfers during the election schedule period, the minister said administrative decisions would be reviewed and investigations conducted if any violations or financial misconduct are found. About 1,700 MPO applications are under consideration and will be reviewed based on budget allocation and verification. Strict action will be taken if corruption is detected, he added. Expressing concern over the prolonged suspension of retirement and welfare benefits for non-government teachers, the minister said the trust would be reconstituted promptly and pending allowances cleared as a matter of priority. Emphasising skill development, he said the government would prioritise technical and technology-based education. Practical components in polytechnic and vocational institutions will be enhanced, industry linkages strengthened and modern technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), incorporated into the curriculum. He also highlighted three immediate priorities of the government: · Creating a conducive environment to bring students back to classrooms · Reviewing and revising the national curriculum · Modernising technical education Question paper leaks, cheating will not return: Education Minister Milon The government’s ‘One Teacher, One Tab’ initiative will be implemented in phases for teachers at primary and secondary levels. Expatriate Bangladeshis have sent over $2 billion in remittances during the first 18 days of February, as money transfers surged ahead of Ramadan and Eid. According to data released by Bangladesh Bank on Thursday (Feb 19), if this upward trend continues, total remittances for the month are expected to cross the $3 billion milestone. Central bank statistics show that January 2026 saw an inflow of $3.17 billion, marking it as the third-highest monthly total in the country's history. The current fiscal year (FY 2025–26) has shown robust growth, with total remittances reaching $21.56 billion between July 1 and February 18. This represents a significant 22.3 percent increase compared to the $17.63 billion received during the same period of last fiscal year 2024-25. The historical peaks for monthly remittances remain: $3.29 billion (March 2025 – fueled by Eid-ul-Fitr) $3.22 billion (December 2025) $3.17 billion (January 2026) Bangladesh’s forex reserves surge past $34 billion driven by remittance boom Impact on Reserves Economists believe the surge in formal channel transfers is a result of a stabilized exchange rate and a decrease in illegal hundi activities following the political transition in August 2024. This influx is providing a much-needed boost to the nation's foreign exchange reserves. As of February 17, the country's gross reserves stood at $34.54 billion. However, according to the IMF’s BPM-6 calculation method, the net reserves are currently valued at $29.86 billion. Train communication on Rahanpur-Rajshahi route in Chapainawabganj, which remained suspended as four wagons of an oil-laden train derailed at Amnura Railway Junction, resumed after nine hours on Thursday. Hasibul Hasan, Station Master of Amnura Railway Junction, said the train was carrying oil from Khulna to the Amnura Power Plant. When the train reached Amnura Junction, four wagons of the train veered off the tracks around 4:45am, disrupting train movement on the Rohanpur-Rajshahi route. A relief train from Ishwardi Railway Junction reached the spot around 10am and salvaged the train around 2:15 pm. Later, the train communication on the route resumed around 2:15 pm, said Station Master Hasibul.

A British couple, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, were sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran on espionage charges, hours after Lindsay spoke to the BBC describing the physical and mental toll of their detention. The couple, who deny the accusations, were arrested in January 2025 while passing through Iran on a round-the-world motorcycle trip. In a rare phone interview from Tehran’s Evin prison, Lindsay described their time in detention as “an endurance test for the mind” and said she had been trying to maintain her health by exercising in the cramped prison yard. Her son, Joe Bennett, called the sentence “gut-wrenching” and said the Iranian authorities had presented no evidence of spying. He urged the UK government to take all available measures to secure their release, adding that the family had felt “abandoned” despite repeated appeals to the Foreign Office. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the sentencing as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable” and assured that the UK would continue to pursue the case and provide consular support. The Foremans had entered Iran from Armenia in December 2024 with visas, a guide, and an approved itinerary, aiming to reach Pakistan by early January. Despite this, they were detained, denied bail, and were not allowed to defend themselves in court. They are currently held in separate wings of Evin prison, notorious for harsh conditions and allegations of torture, alongside journalists and political prisoners. Human rights groups have previously warned that foreign nationals in Iran are often detained as diplomatic leverage. In recent years, several British-Iranian citizens and other foreign nationals have been released only after government negotiations or settlements. Lindsay Foreman said she had tried to engage with Iran’s legal system, writing a letter to protest their treatment and seeking a fair hearing. Consumers Association of Bangladesh urged authorities to take strict legal measures against parties blocking a government-led market initiative and imposing unjustified price increases on essential goods, highlighting growing concerns over consumer protection and market regulation. In a statement issued on Thursday, the consumer rights body strongly protested the incident that took place during a monitoring drive at Moulvibazar in the capital. Date prices jump on first day of Ramadan despite ample supply, tariff cuts According to the statement, a team led by Abdul Jabbar Mondal, Assistant Director of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department’s Dhaka Divisional Office, conducted the drive on Wednesday. During the drive, inspectors found that the price of lentils had been increased by Tk 5 per kg within just 10 days at a trading establishment. When asked to explain the price hike, the traders claimed higher procurement costs but failed to produce any valid cash memos in support of their claim. They reportedly admitted that goods were purchased on credit and cash memos were collected only after payment was made following sales — a practice that violates existing laws and undermines market transparency. In this connection, the authorities fined the establishment Tk 5,000 under Section 45 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009. CAB alleged that Mohammad Ali Bhuiyan, president of the Moulvibazar Traders’ Association, publicly refused to pay the fine and mobilised traders, announcing a shutdown of shops. He was also accused of inciting others and creating obstruction to the government operation. CAB said unjustified price hikes of essentials, failure to maintain proper cash memo documentation and resistance to official monitoring drives reflect disorder in market management and anti-consumer practices. The organisation called for exemplary punishment for those involved in price manipulation and obstruction of official duties, strict enforcement of mandatory cash memo issuance and stronger, regular market monitoring to ensure transparency and accountability. It also urged the authorities concerned to take swift and effective steps to safeguard consumers’ rights and uphold good governance in the market system.

Consumers in Chattogram are facing steep price increases for essential food items on the first day of Ramadan, raising concerns over affordability for iftar and sehri meals. A market survey found medium-sized lemons, which sold for Tk 20–40 two weeks ago, now priced above Tk 60. Vendors said pre-Ramadan prices last year ranged from Tk 40–50, but this season, limited supply and heightened demand have pushed prices up to Tk 120. Other vegetables have also seen notable gains. Eggplant and cucumber rose by Tk 20 per kilogram, now trading at Tk 80–120 and Tk 80–100, respectively. Tomato and carrot prices increased by Tk 10 per kilogram, while green chilies are fetching Tk 140–160. Traders cited rising wholesale costs as a primary driver of retail price hikes. Meat prices are climbing as well, straining budgets for low- and middle-income households. Broiler chicken, which sold for Tk 160–170 per kilogram two weeks ago, now costs Tk 200–220, while Sonali chicken is priced at Tk 320–350 per kilogram, up by Tk 30–40. Farmers and sellers pointed to higher chickling prices and winter poultry mortality as key factors. Fish such as tilapia, pangas, rui, and katla have also seen increases of Tk 20–50 per kilogram. Authorities are stepping up monitoring to curb price manipulation. Foiz Ullah, Deputy Director of the Department of Consumer Rights Protection, said syndicates are using phone networks to control markets, adding that raids and legal action are underway. Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Jahidul Islam Miah met traders at the city’s wholesale hub in Khatungonj, urging them to maintain affordable prices. Chattogram port workers' strike called off The Chattogram Metropolitan Police, alongside senior officials, conducted inspections of wholesale rates for onions, dates, lentils, sugar, chickpeas and other Ramadan essentials. “Any attempt at artificial price hikes will be met with strict action,” DC Jahidul Islam said, warning that syndicate manipulation would not be tolerated.

Terming external debt pressure the biggest challenge for Bangladesh newly elected government, economist Debapriya Bhattacharya on Thursday said the administration must act with prudence to stabilise the economy. “Even during the interim government’s tenure, the burden of foreign loans did not ease. Bangladesh is in a fragile position regarding external debt repayments. There is no scope for populist measures at this moment,” Debapriya said at a media briefing titled ‘Starting Point of the New Government: An Economic Review’ at BRAC Centre Inn in the capital’s Mohakhali. Addressing the BNP-led government, Debapriya said restraint in fiscal management would be crucial. “You may not call it austerity, but discipline is essential. Without fiscal restraint, inflation and other macroeconomic vulnerabilities will intensify in the next fiscal year.” Referring to the BNP’s landslide victory in the 13th national election, he said the party now holds sufficient political strength to undertake difficult economic reforms. “The government should form a transition team to steer the economy out of the current crisis. This team can prepare briefing documents for each ministry, outlining where the economy stands and the direction it needs to take.” Debapriya also urged a thorough review of procurement and foreign agreements signed by the interim government before leaving office. “Many of those contracts are not well known to the public. It must be examined whether any rules or procedures were violated. All agreements should be reassessed prioritising national interest.” People to emerge as frontline guardians of democracy: Debapriya He categorically ruled out printing money as a solution to the crisis, stressing the need for structural reforms and prudent macroeconomic management. The Election Commission (EC) hurriedly published the gazette notification of the elected MPs of the 13th parliamentary election without investigating whether disqualified contestants took part in the polls, said Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar on Thursday. “The Election Commission did not conduct any investigation. Instead, it hurriedly published the gazette at dead night. Once the gazette is published, the Commission’s jurisdiction effectively ends. They have washed their hands of the matter and have nothing more to do,” he said at a press conference in the city. Shujan arranged the press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital to raise information on the newly elected members of the 13th parliament. Dr Majumdar said it was the responsibility of the EC to conduct investigation when such questions were raised regarding candidates’ eligibility. “The Commission could investigate and even cancel the results if necessary. It also has the authority to order a re-election.” He said they requested the EC to investigate allegations related to loan defaulters, utility bill defaulters, dual citizenship and other grounds of disqualification before publishing the gazette. He said there is still scope under the Article 91F of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) to take action in this regard as the Commission has authority to declare the election of such disqualified candidates void. “We also made an important recommendation that within 48 hours of the election, the Commission should certify whether the polls were conducted in a free and fair manner. This certification is crucial,” he said. According to Shujan’s data, 147 out of the 297 elected candidates in the 13th parliamentary election are loan borrowers. Among them, 36 candidates have loans exceeding Tk 5 crore.

Islamic University in Kushtia is set to go on a 38-day vacation on the occasion of Holy Ramadan, International Mother Language Day, Dol Purnima, Shab-e-Qadr, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Independence and National Day from February 18. An office notice, signed by IU acting registrar Professor M Manjurul Haque, was issued in this regard on Thursday. According to the notice, the vacation will begin on February 18 and continue until March 27, 2026. Academic and administrative activities are scheduled to resume on March 28. However, departments will be allowed to conduct examinations on dates marked in blue in the university’s academic calendar, if necessary. In a separate office order issued on February 16, revised office hours were announced for the month of Ramadan. During this period, offices will operate from 9:00am to 3:30pm, with a 15-minute break from 1:15pm to 1:30pm for Zuhr prayers. University offices will remain open under this schedule until March 15. The notice also states that university offices will remain closed on February 21 on the occasion of International Mother Language Day and from March 16 to March 27, totaling 12 days, for Shab-e-Qadr, Eid-ul-Fitr and weekly holidays. Islamic University students demand justice for murdered fellow student Despite the general closure, essential services, including medical services, water and electricity supply, ICT services, security, and estate management, will remain operational during the vacation period. The administration has also directed all departments and offices to submit a report on staff attendance and absence to the Registrar’s Office by 11:00am on March 28, the first working day after the vacation.  

A railway police officer was injured after being hit by a train at Joydebpur Rail Station in Gazipur district on Thursday. The injured was identified as sub-inspector Habib. Md Kaiyum Ali, officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost said, the accident took place on line No. 4 at Joydebpur Railway Station when a train hit SI Habib while he was talking on his mobile phone and walking along the railway track, leaving him injured. His right arm and right leg were severed during the accident, said OC. He was first taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Thames Valley Police confirmed. The arrest coincides with his 66th birthday. Police are conducting searches at multiple locations, including addresses in Berkshire, Norfolk, and the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where Andrew lived until recently. Unmarked vehicles were also spotted arriving at his Sandringham Estate home earlier today. King Charles, who was reportedly not informed in advance about the arrest, released a statement expressing “the deepest concern” over the news and emphasizing that “the law must take its course.” Buckingham Palace also confirmed full support for the ongoing police investigation. The investigation relates to allegations that Andrew, during his time as a trade envoy, shared confidential material with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Thames Valley Police stressed that the inquiry focuses on potential misconduct in public office rather than allegations involving Virginia Giuffre. Legal experts noted that proving misconduct in public office requires meeting several conditions, including establishing that the individual knowingly abused their official position and acted without reasonable excuse. The arrest allows police to search Andrew’s properties and access relevant documents, files, and electronic equipment. Despite the arrest, Queen Camilla and other senior royals continued with scheduled public engagements. The prices of dates surged by as much as Tk 50 per kilogram in Dhaka on the first day of Ramadan, even as traders and officials say supplies remain adequate and import duties were recently reduced to stabilise the market. Zahidi dates, a popular choice among middle, and lower-income consumers, were selling for Tk 350 per kg on Thursday, up from Tk 280-300 earlier this week. Compared with the first day of Ramadan last year, the variety is nearly Tk 100 per kg more expensive. Lower-priced loose or ‘bosta’ dates were trading at Tk 250–280 per kg, up from Tk 220–250 two days ago, according to visits to several retail markets in the capital. Police arrested content creator Ashraful Alam alias Hero Alam from Shahjahanpur upazila in Bogura district in connection with a case filed over violating a woman with a promise of marrying her. Tipped off, a team of police put up a barricade on Dhaka-Rangpur Majhira Bandar area in the upazila and arrested Hero Alam from his personal vehicle, said Additional Superintendent of Bogura Police, Mostafa Manjur. Later, he was produced before the Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal and the tribunal sent him to jail. Earlier on February 10, this year, a Bogura court issued a warrant for the arrest of Hero Alam in a rape case. Judge of the Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Anwarul Haque passed the order. According to the case statement, the accused, Ashraful Alam, allegedly lured Sadia Rahman Mithila with the promise of making her an actress and assuring marriage. He is accused of subsequently raping, physically abusing her and forcing her to undergo an abortion. A case was filed under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against him on April 21, 2025. Investigators reported that preliminary inquiry found some elements of the allegations to be credible, which formed the basis for the court’s arrest warrant.
