For the elderly residents of a small old-age home in Narail, this year’s Pahela Falgun and Valentine’s Day brought an uncommon burst of colour, music and warmth.

The twin celebrations turned into a day of shared happiness at the “Bela Sheshe” old-age home at Gopikantapur village of Narail Sadar.

On Saturday afternoon, volunteers greeted the residents with flowers, cut cakes, presented new clothes, served special meals and arranged games, songs and prize distribution — transforming the usually quiet premises into a lively gathering of generations.

The event was organised by Swapner Khoje Foundation, a volunteer organisation led by youths.

Decorated with flowers and festive touches, the old-age home shed its usual stillness as laughter and music filled the air.

Young volunteers sang songs alongside the elderly, while balloons were popped amid cheers from both young and old participants.

Afaz Uddin and Arati Dhar, two of the residents, said the day had brought back memories of brighter times.

“The boys and girls of Swapner Khoje Foundation cut cakes with us and gave us new clothes on this Valentine’s Day and Pahela Falgun. They arranged quality food, games and prizes. Even if only for a moment, they brought waves of joy to our hearts,” Afaz Uddin said expressing gratitude for the initiative.

Mahiyuddin, general secretary of the organisation, said the volunteers wanted to share the festive spirit with those who are often left out of mainstream celebrations.

“After the election and on the occasion Valentine’s Day and Pahela Falgun, we decided to spend time with the elderly and celebrate together,” he said.

Mirza Galib Sotej, founding president of the foundation, said the organisation was launched on February 14, 2017, and has marked Valentine’s Day each year with humanitarian initiatives.

“Since our inception, we have arranged such programmes on Valentine’s Day. We work with underprivileged children and members of the Bede community. Our 45 members save money from family support and study expenses to carry out humanitarian activities,” he said.
