A local leader of the Bangladesh Awami League died at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital on Sunday while in jail custody. The deceased, Shamikul Islam Lipon, was president of the Gaibandha district unit of the Awami League. Lipon, who had been in custody for an extended period in connection with a case filed with Sadar Police Station, fell ill early Sunday, according to prison officials. He was first taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Anwar Hossain, Jail Super of Gaibandha District Jail, said Lipon had previously received medical treatment while in custody. Police arrested him from the Moghbazar area of Dhaka on December 8, 2024. He had remained in jail since then. Lipon began his political career in 1996 as president of Palashbari Upazila Jubo League. He later served as organising secretary of Palashbari Upazila Awami League, became its general secretary in 2016, and had been serving as president since 2018.  

A local leader of Awami League, who was in Bogura jail, died while undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital under police custody on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Emdadul Haque Bhuttu, 51, vice-organising secretary of Dakkhinpara union unit of Awami League in Gabtoli upazila of the district. The AL leader was sent to jail in a case filed for vandalism and explosive act on February 26, said jailer Syed Shah Sharif. Emdadul fell sick after having sehri, the pre-dawn meal for Muslims during Ramadan, early Tuesday and was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital. Primarily, it is suspected that he died of a cardiac arrest. So far, four leaders of Awami League have died in Bogura jail since August. They were Bogura district unit AL organising secretary Shahadat Alam Jhunu, Durgahata union unit AL former chairman Abdul Matin Mithu, Shibganj upazila unit AL treasurer Abdul Latif, and general secretary of no 15 ward of Bogura municipality Shahidul Islam Ratan.

Former state minister AKM Zahangir Hossain has died from Covid-19 at a city hospital.

A local leader of Awami League died from coronavirus at a hospital in the capital early Thursday.   The deceased was identified as Ashiqur Rashid Helal, 60, president of Dhunat municipality unit Awami League.   AL leader Helal was undergoing treatment at Bogura TMSS Medical College and Hospital after he tested positive for Covid-19 on June 23.

A local leader of Awami League who had been suffering from fever and cold died at Keraniganj Upazila Health Complex on Monday.
