The minister said when the current government assumed office, there was little scope to take special measures ahead of Ramadan.

PM Tarique urges market restraint ahead of Ramadan
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday urged traders to exercise restraint in the market as the holy month of Ramadan is set to begin across the country on Thursday, warning against profiteering that could increase public suffering.
In a televised address to the nation at night, the Prime Minister said Ramadan is a month of self-purification and stressed that its true spirit must be reflected in economic behaviour as well.
“If we truly understand the essence of self-purification, there should be no increase in people’s suffering during this month,” he said.
Observing that a tendency to make excessive profits is often noticed among some businesses during Ramadan, Tarique Rahman called upon traders not to treat the sacred month as an opportunity for higher profit.
He urged businesspeople to remain cautious so that the prices of essential commodities do not go beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.
The Prime Minister said the current government’s stance towards traders—small, medium or large—is simple and clear, adding that it intends to take necessary steps while protecting the interests of both businesspeople and consumers.
Tarique said the government is ready to listen to any suggestions or complaints from stakeholders regarding measures that could help keep the market situation stable and safeguard the interests of buyers and sellers alike.
PM orders steps to keep prices stable, ensure uninterrupted power supply during Ramadan
“This government belongs to all—buyers and sellers. This government is yours. You have entrusted it with the responsibility of running the state through your votes. You are the strength of this government,” he added.
Referring to the government’s political mandate, he said the administration assumed office with a commitment to uphold the rights of the people and dismantle mafia syndicates, following the fall of such a syndicate at the cost of thousands of lives.
The BNP government is determined to break all syndicates involved in irregularities and corruption in every sector, he said, expressing hope that this pledge would be fulfilled.
Extending his greetings to the nation on the occasion of the holy month, the Prime Minister said Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, discipline and responsibility.
About the needs of fasting Muslims, he said worshippers expect uninterrupted gas, water and electricity supply during iftar, tarawih and sehri, and mentioned that he has already instructed the relevant authorities to ensure smooth supply during these periods.
Emphasising austerity, the Prime Minister said preventing waste and practising restraint are part of a Muslim’s faith. Avoiding unnecessary or excessive use of gas, electricity and water in offices and courts is also an act of worship, he added.
Before calling upon government and private officials and the general public to practise austerity, the Prime Minister said he sought to set an example by encouraging ministers and BNP Members of Parliament to do so first.

PM orders steps to keep prices stable, ensure uninterrupted power supply during Ramadan
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered keeping commodity prices stable, maintain law and order and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the holy month of Ramadan.
The directives came at the first cabinet meeting of the newly formed BNP-led government held at the Secretariat in the afternoon.
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan briefed reporters after the meeting.
He said the cabinet sat at the Prime Minister’s call and discussed possible urgent national issues.
In light of discussions, the Prime Minister advised all regarding the government’s immediate priorities, he said.
He put special emphasis on uninterrupted power during Tarabih prayers and at iftar time so that people do not face any inconvenience, Swapan said.
“Although today’s meeting was a courtesy one, these three issues have come up as our main priorities,” he added.
Replying to a question on implementation, the minister said the respective ministers concerned would submit their action plans to the Prime Minister within the next couple of days.
“Following further directives from the Prime Minister, we will take necessary steps accordingly,” he said.
“We have calculated that addressing the urgent problems to a respectable level would require at least 180 days. A draft plan has already been prepared, and the nation will soon be informed through you,” he said .
On a question about fulfilling political pledges, particularly media freedom, the minister said ensuring free flow of information and independence of the media is one of the government’s key commitments.

Bangladesh to seek delay in LDC graduation, says Commerce Minister
The newly elected BNP government will take necessary steps to defer Bangladesh’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Wednesday.
“We will take all required measures to defer the LDC graduation. Work on the matter has already begun,” Muktadir told reporters at the Secretariat on his first day in office.
Muktadir said the government is keen to defer the graduation timeline and will do whatever is necessary to that end.
The initiative has started from the Ministry of Commerce and will be pursued in coordination with the Economic Relations Division (ERD) to expedite required communications and procedures.
Referring to long-standing demands from business leaders, he said the issue is being treated with utmost priority. “There is no obligation to send a letter within the first week, but we have started working on it from today.”
On the recent slowdown in exports, the Commerce Minister said Bangladesh’s export basket remains highly concentrated, with nearly 85 percent of total exports dependent on a single product.
To overcome the vulnerability, Muktadir stressed the need for diversification by adding new products and expanding into new markets. The private sector, particularly investment-oriented entrepreneurs, will receive necessary support, he said.
Responding to concerns over the Ramadan market, Muktadir said stable supply would ensure market stability. “The government has adequate stocks of essential commodities for Ramadan and the subsequent period, with sufficient supplies also in the pipeline. There is no reason to panic over the Ramadan market.”
Explaining the price hikes of certain items at the beginning of Ramadan, he said the increases are often driven by a one-off surge in demand as consumers tend to purchase for the entire month at once, temporarily impacting the retail market. “Such impact does not last long.”
Finance Minister Amir Khosru unveils ambitious reform plan on day one
Asked whether the onset of Ramadan immediately after the new government assumed office poses a major challenge, Muktadir said managing the holy month will be a crucial test for the government. “We must meet people’s expectations. There is no alternative to success.”
On foreign and domestic investment, the minister noted that investment does not flow amid uncertainty. A stable environment is the primary condition for attracting investment, as investors seek assurance of expected returns against their capital and labour.
Muktadir said Bangladesh has a large working-age population, with around 2 to 2.2 million people entering the labour market every year. Investment stagnation over the past two to three years has created significant pressure and failure to address the situation promptly could pose serious risks to employment and the broader economy.
State Minister for Commerce Md Shariful Alam and Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman were present.
Later, the Commerce Minister exchanged views with senior officials and heads of departments under the ministry.

Long queues for TCB goods in Rangpur; people call for more truck sales
Long queues formed in Rangpur city on Wednesday as residents lined up to buy subsidised essential goods from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), which launched truck-based sales at 15 areas in the city ahead of of Ramadan.
With TCB trucks operating in 15 out of 33 wards in Rangpur city, many low- and middle-income people were seen waiting early in the morning at spots where the trucks would be stationed.
People said they faced hardship in accessing the goods and called for one TCB truck per ward to ease the situation.
Under the programme that started on Tuesday, consumers can buy soybean oil, lentils, sugar, chickpeas, and dates at prices lower than the regular market rate.
The initiative will continue until March 12.
According to TCB officials, chickpeas and dates have been added to the regular Ramadan items.
Each package is priced at Tk 590.
Nearly 400 customers can purchase goods from each truck daily, allowing around 6,000 people to benefit each day.
Bablu Mia, who came to buy TCB goods, said, “For poor families, TCB supplies are a big help. With the current market situation, this service is beneficial even temporarily. Though the range of goods is limited, we hope it continues throughout Ramadan.”
Another resident, Romjan Ali, said, “In Bangladesh, prices of all food items usually double during Ramadan. For low-income people like us, this month is very difficult. TCB’s subsidised goods are a good initiative, but more trucks would make it easier for everyone to access them.”

Kulsun Begum, a day labourer, said, “We live hand to mouth. I have been waiting in line since morning, but I still haven’t received anything. We have no guarantee when we will get the items. Poor people have no choice but to wait in line.”
Habibur Rahman, regional deputy director and office head of TCB in Rangpur, said the goods will be sold daily except on public holidays.
Both family cardholders and general customers can purchase the items.
He said to ensure low-income people in Rangpur city can access the goods, sales will take place at different spots on different days.
Currently, 15 trucks are operating in Rangpur city while sales continue at five points in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, and Nilphamari districts.
